1984: Part 3 Chapters 3-4
Hello 12A & 12D,
I hope you and your families are keeping well.
Remember...I need the unseen essay from the last blog so I can give you feedback ASAP.
Now, to chapters 3-4.
You should spend about 3 hours on dystopia this week...go through the tasks in order and let me know, as ever, if you need any help. Please submit this as a document by next Wednesday (20th).
Thanks,
Mr M

Task 1
Using JStor/Google Scholar (use google to find either)...find an article or part of an article which explains Orwell's view of religion and how it influenced his work. Paste the parts of the article which are relevant - ideally quotes or criticism that is a few sentences long in to your word document for the week. I will then collate some of these and share with you on the next blog post.
Task 2
Brainstorm the following question (20-25 mins, with a buddy if you like - make bulletpoint notes).
What is the significance of religion in 1984?
Consider the following things: Orwell's beliefs, religion in 1948 England, Orwell's view of catholicism and communism, the slogans and language of the Party, the behaviour of citizens of Oceania.
Include quotes where possible/appropriate
Task 3
Make notes as bullet-points/ short paragraphs to respond to the following questions:
Part
3 – Chapter 3
How are the following things
portrayed:
•Religion?
•Control?
•O’Brien?
•Winston?
EXT: Can you spot any other key
themes in this chapter? How are they
portrayed effectively?
Task 4
What
is the significance of “sanity is not statistical”?
How does this change in Part 3, Chapter 4?
Why has Orwell done this?
Task 5
Part
3 – Chapter 4
•Look at pages 318-319. Here Winston tries to re-educate
himself. What is the significance of
“only”, “except” and the repeated “but”?
•How is “Julia! Julia! Julia, my
love! Julia!” significant?
•Consider the language used to
present Winston.
